Just a few days ago the launch of a new projection system for mobile devices by Microvision and now here’s 3M with a fully operation projection device that can be implanted into any mobile phone. Sweet.

The LED-based device is less than half an inch thick and roughly the same size as a wireless earpiece. Despite this, 3M claims that it is capable of VGA resolution images and unlike certain other tiny projection technologies, it is available today. Texas Instruments showed it’s own Pico Projector in action here a few months back.

3M claims that its wee projector is capable of firing out a 40in, or larger, image with “no-speckle and a high-fill factor that ensures superior image quality”.

“3M mobile projection engines achieve the size, efficiency, image quality and affordability needed for consumer adoption of this promising new product category,” said Mike Kelly, executive vice president, 3M Display and Graphics Business.

It will be interesting to see which phone maker snaps this up first. It’s about time luxury mobile phones offered something a lot more useful and cool than some silly shiny metal and Swarovski crystals.-Martin Lynch

Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer launches high street range

Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer launches high street range

Apr 2008

CELEBRITY fashion designer Elizabeth Emanuel created one of the most famous wedding dresses of all time for Lady Diana Spencer in the early Eighties. Now, for the first time, she has launched a bridal collection on the high street.

With price tags into the thousands and tens of thousands, Elizabeth Emanuel’s bridal gowns have only been worn by the rich and famous - until now.

After teaming up with high street store Bhs, Elizabeth’s dresses are now available for under £500.

Dubbed the Art of Elegance, the exclusive capsule collection - which is only available in Scotland at Bhs’s Glasgow (St Enoch Centre) and Edinburgh stores - includes four gowns fit for a princess.

The designer revealed: “Honestly, blood, sweat and tears have gone into these dresses. I have been involved in every single bit of it - from the design stage, right through to making the patterns, creating the original sample, to packaging and presentation, which has been fantastic.

“The dresses don’t look like anything else on the market. They look even better in the flesh than they do in photographs.

“If we were to make these dresses in the studio, they would be at least a couple of thousand pounds to make from scratch.

“Bhs organised all the production and they have done a fantastic job. I was very pleased with how they made them look.”

All four of Elizabeth’s wedding gowns in her Art of Elegance collection are ivory in colour, not white, something the designer thought carefully about.

“We use this colour all the time. I don’t like using white whites because it’s not suited to the British complexion and drains you,” she said. “Ivory is much more flattering.”

Although they are affordable, the gowns are not “cheap and nasty”, insisted Elizabeth.

“These dresses are all different sides of romance and are very feminine,” she said.

“One is a very elegant look, one is very romanticand fairy-tale-like, with Swarovski crystal on the front.

“One is like a Gainsborough painting with a built-in sash and a beautiful, long, trailing bow at the back and there’s one with a little lace over the bust cups.

“They look fantastic on girls of all different shapes and sizes. They hoik you in at the waist and they have boned corsets, too.

“They go up to a size 16 but I think, as we add to the collection, we will go bigger because I think it is a shame bigger girls are excluded.

“These dresses are made for girls with curves.”

For her own wedding to now ex-husband David Emanuel, Elizabeth opted for a white chiffon designer gown created by English fashion designer Zandra Rhodes - a dress now in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

But when she walked down the aisle in 1976, she was unaware that, a few years later, she and David would design one of the most iconic wedding gowns of the century for Lady Diana, who married Prince Charles in 1981.

That dress turned Diana into a fairy-tale princess and catapulted the Emanuels into the international spotlight.

Since then, Elizabeth has been continuing to create headline-grabbing dresses for clients.

She designed wedding dresses for Sarah Greene when she married Mike Smith, one of the Duran Duran girls, actress Sophie Ward and was stylist for the Bransons’ wedding.

The 54-year-old fashionista’s other celebrity clients include Sharon Osbourne, having designed the dresses she wore at the Brits and the X Factor finals. She also designed Paula Abdul’s red dress for American Idol Gives Back and a gown the singer wore at the Emmy Awards.

“I’ve been very lucky. I have worked with some lovely people. I do get a thrill when I see them wearing something I have created with my team,” she said.

Last year, Elizabeth and her team of designers at her Art of Being studio created Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton’s dress when she married Ordinary Boy, Preston.

But now her creations are available on the high street for all women.

Coincidentally, ex-husband David has also launched a collection in conjunction with a high street name.

In 2007, his new range for women aged 45-plus went on sale at Bonmarche.

Already, there has been a positive response to Elizabeth’s bridal collection at Bhs and brides-to-be are saying “I do” before they even walk down the aisle.

Elizabeth added: “We’ve had such a cross-section. We’ve had very young girls interested and I have had women on their second and third marriages.

“One girl was getting married in Italy. Another was in tears as she had just bought a discounted dress for £500 at a wedding fair.

“And another girl turned up saying she was going to get one anyway, even though she didn’t have anybody in mind.”

When Elizabeth suggested I try one of her creations on for myself, I couldn’t resist.

I opted for the one with lace on the bust cups. I stepped carefully into it and was very surprised at its weight - despite costing under £500, there is a lot of material and layers to it.

It sounds cliched but this gorgeous gown did make me feel a like a princess - I wonder if this was how Diana felt as she tried on her dress before her wedding?

For the money, there is nothing else like this on the market. Now I have found my dress, I just have to find my Prince …

Scot behind £10m takeover of Fake Bake tanning firm

Scot behind £10m takeover of Fake Bake tanning firm

Apr 2008 By

ONE of the world’s best known fake tan firms have been taken over by a Scots entrepreneur.

Sandra McClumpha headed a group that paid £10million to buy the rights to Fake Bake.

The mum-of-two, who has distributed the tanning products in Britain since 2001, sealed the deal with American founders Joe and Mary Cooper.

Sandra said: “It has been a long and hard but enjoyable road to establish Fake Bake as a market leader in the UK and it now feels like the most natural step to take on the global future of Fake Bake.”

The 38-year-old first came across Fake Bake in 2000 when she ran a beauty salon in her home town of Stirling.

She persuaded the owners to appoint her the sole distributor for the UK and Europe, sold the shop for £120,000 and invested the profits in Fake Bake UK.

She initially supplied shoppers and tanning salons from her bedroom.

Fake Bake quickly took off, thanks to its popularity with celebrities such as Girls Aloud’s Nadine Coyle.

With Sandra at the helm, Fake Bake UK went on to be named Best Spray Tan by This Morning and was described by one beauty expert on GMTV as “the Rolls Royce of self tanning”.

Most recently, industry publication Pure Beauty Magazine awarded it the gold prize in their 2007 tanning awards, a year after Sandra won a prestigious business award for her success.

Last year, Fake Bake UK boasted an annual turnover of £4.5million, with 25 staff and three training schools and Sandra was invited to an event celebrating elite businesswomen at Buckingham Palace.

Sandra has vowed to redesign the packaging and recently oversaw a promotional photo shoot in South Africa.

She said: “The key to Fake Bake’s success in the UK has been the loyalty and support I have received from salon owners.

“This is a way in which I can thank the salons’ owners for believing in me from the beginning.”

Asda ditch Coleen McLoughlin to move clothes range ‘upmarket’

Asda ditch Coleen McLoughlin to move clothes range ‘upmarket’

Apr 2008

COLEEN McLoughlin has been axed as the face of Asda’s clothing range as they plan to go more “upmarket”.

Top of Asda’s wish-list to replace the 22-year-old is Carla Bruni - the first lady of France.

The move is part of a plan to attract more middle-class shoppers to the George fashion brand.

Privately, Asda bosses have revealed they want to ditch the “chavvy” footballer’s WAG image.

They want to emulate the success of Marks & Spencer, who feature a range of models for all ages, from Twiggy to Jade Jagger.

George brand director Fiona Lambert revealed their next campaign would feature a trio of women so shoppers from 15-65 could identify with them.

They are targeting Sienna Miller for the under 25s, Carla Bruni for fashion-conscious thirty somethings and award winning Queen actress Helen Mirren for the mature market.

Lambert said it was time to “spruce up” the designs.

She added: “Coleen has been a fantastic ambassador for us and we can’t thank her enough.

“But it’s time to change the emphasis. We want to show our core fashions are for everyone.”

Rebecca Wilcox On Landing Dream Tv Job

Rebecca Wilcox On Landing Dream Tv Job

AS Esther Rantzen’s daughter, she has followed in her famous mum’s footsteps by becoming a TV presenter on Channel 4’s How To Look Good Naked.

Rebecca Wilcox, who is Esther and her late husband Desmond’s middle child, can be seen on our screens as a roving beauty reporter on the hit show presented by Gok Wan that tries to make women feel good about themselves again.

It’s a dream come true for Rebecca, 26, who has harboured ambitions to be like her mum and work as a TV host since she was a teenager.

She’s also a “self-confessed beauty addict”, making her the ideal person to try the many different products on offer.

From creams, moisturisers and fake tans to mascara, Rebecca road-tests the products to see if they do what their labels promise.

From chopping 500 onions, to going to a water theme park to see if waterproof eye shadow really does stay on, Rebecca believes the show is brilliant at showing women they don’t have to diet to look beautiful.

“I am a complete addict when it comes to beauty products,” explained Rebecca. “I have got boxes and boxes of them and, when we recently moved house, my boyfriend looked at me as if I was a complete freak because I had so many. I have been playing with wrinkle creams since I was 12. I know it is ridiculous but I love them. If I was a millionaire, I’d drown myself in Creme de la Mer.

“It’s so exciting doing the show and we get to road-test the products. I have got to give up trying to look good, though, as we are put under extreme circumstances - such as the water park to test out a waterproof eye shadow.”

Different filming schedules have meant Rebecca has yet to meet Gok but she admits if anybody was going to persuade her to strip for the nation, it would be him.

She said: “Isn’t he so lovely? I really want to meet him. I’d say no, I wouldn’t strip naked but I am sure he could persuade me. Gok has got a brilliant touch when it comes to helping women feel fabulous.”

An incredibly down-to-earth, fun woman who, like her mum, wears her heart on her sleeve, Rebecca recalls how she watched Esther in the past getting teased over her “teeth and scrawny legs”.

“It is so much harder for women,” added Rebecca. “Mum is so level-headed but it’s still not very nice.

“I know I am never going to be stunning. But my take is that I am using my brain more, rather than my looks.” With her long blonde hair and enviable slim figure, Rebecca is gorgeous - even if she doesn’t think so.

“I am a gym phobic,” she said. “I love Davina’s fitness video and I have got the comforteating genes in me. I love my bagels a lot but if I want to stay under a size 20, I can’t go near them.”

According to Rebecca, her mum is thrilled she has landed ajob on the programme.

“She loves the show, too, and she is really proud of me. We are very close and we see each other at least once, if not twice, a week. She is a fantastic mum.

“I was a hideous teenager, though. I was the stroppiest cow and I have put myself off having children, I was so horrid.”

Rebecca, who lives with Jim, her boyfriend of seven years, in London, said her family keeps her grounded.

Incredibly close to her mum and brother, Josh, and sister, Emily, she says the death of her father, Desmond, seven years ago, made their bond stronger.

“We all miss him so much still,” she said. “He was a wonderful father. Josh, Emily and I are really close.”

Amy Winehouse to report to police regarding assualt

Amy Winehouse will be questioned by police today (April 25) with regard to an alleged assault that occurred in Camden Town, north London on Wednesday night (April 23).

A drinker in a Camden bar has accused Winehouse of assaulting her. Various tabloid newspapers reported that the singer headbutted a punter in Bar Tok on Chalk Farm Road in the London borough.

BBC News reports that Metropolitan Police would not discuss who would be questioned with regards to the inquiry, although Winehouse’s spokesperson confirmed that the singer would be quizzed.

Metallica to ‘do a Radiohead’?

Metallica to ‘do a Radiohead’?

Band hint at future internet releases

Metallica have hinted that they are considering releasing music in the style of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, who recently gave away material free online.

Drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that he had observed the behaviour of both acts, and said Metallica may be influenced by them in the future.

The band’s traditional record deal with Warners expires when they release their next studio album.

“We’re looking at how we can embrace everything,” Ulrich said. “We want to be as free players as possible. We’ve been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor [of Nine Inch Nails] and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet.”

The news may come as a surprise to some Metallica fans. Ulrich has traditionally been opposed to free downloads. In 2000 the band sued peer-to-peer software company Napster for distributing their songs.

Phil Collins announces musical retirement

Phil Collins announces musical retirement

Genesis man will longer tour or record

Phil Collins has announced that he is retiring from music.

Having completed a reunion tour with Genesis, the multi-instrumentalist has said in a newspaper interview that he has no plans to tour or make another album.

Collins told The Times that he will continue to write, simply because he does not know how to stop.

The interview quotes Collins as saying he is more interested in his collection of memorabilia from the Battle Of The Alamo than music.

Collins said: “It’s not that unusual for a man of my age, who grew up reading Davy Crockett.”

Collins was speaking ahead of his appearance on Sky Arts TV series ‘Songbook’.

He re-ignited an old feud with Noel Gallagher. The Oasis man famously said ahead of the 2005 general election: “Vote Labour, if you don’t and the Tories get in, (Collins) is threatening to come back from Switzerland, and none of us want that.

Collins said of the comment: “I don’t care if he likes my music or not. I do care if he starts telling people I’m a wanker because of my politics. It’s an opinion based on an old misunderstood quote.”
